Katy Ross and Martha Kroncke --Les Nenes-- started working in kitchens in the United States at tender ages. Because of this background, they incorporate the culinary arts into the daily life of the inn. After travelling extensively, they chose the small town of Jafre, Girona-Catalunya, as the perfect place to begin a new venue.
From their Bed & Breakfast they offer cooking classes, and wine and olive oil tastings. Their collective experience of over 40 years includes years of teaching at the California Culinary Academy and stints at various high profile restaurants in San Francisco: Chez Panisse, China Moon, One Market, Vertigo, and Venezia.
Cooking Classes
Often there are informal barbecues on the terrace with groups observing and learning as they cook. Les Nenes teach many styles of cooking. Catalan and Spanish dishes, such as paella, will be interesting for those exploring the area. For the adventurous, there are also classes in Asian cuisines and Latin cuisines. Guests then eat on the patio in good weather or in the dining room if too hot or cold.
The classes begin at 6 or 6:30 pm in the evening. The ideal number of students is 2-4 adults. The class then prepares dinner to the specifications of their menu. Classes for the students are 40€ each, guests of the ‘cooks’ will be 15€ per person. Les Nenas need confirmation of numbers and menu for the class the day before, so that they can prepare.
Meals
Dinners are available with prior notice and include 4 courses, wine and water, for 18€ per person, depending on wine selection and menu. We start with a pica-pica (traditional Spanish nibbles), appetizer, entrée, dessert and then coffee and an after dinner drink. You can request any type of cuisine or type of food. Special dietary needs such as vegetarian, macrobiotic, seafood only, or international dishes can be met. However, with this there may be an additional surcharge.
